THERE ARE THREE LEVELS OF CHARGING

-
Primarily Home-Based AC Charging using a 115V or 230V AC outlet
-
Chargers are usually provided with the Electric Vehicle
-
Charge time is usually 10 - 12 hours
-
Home-based AC charging at 230V AC or Commercial Charging Stations
-
Home Chargers are usually purchased separately
-
230V AC outlet home installation would need to be hand-wired on a separate breaker
-
A commercial Charging Station would need to have a connector plug to fit your vehicle and there is a cost associated
-
Tesla cables are 115V and 230V compatible by default
-
Charge time is usually 5 - 8 hours
-
DC Fast Charging at a Commercial Charging Station, usually at a cost
-
Charge Time Usually 0.5 - 2 hours
-
Ultra-fast Charging for Performance Vehicles also Available with a Charge Time of 5 - 15 minutes

EV STANDARDS AND CONNECTORS

There are a number of Charging Standards:
LEVEL 2
J1772 Standard & J-Plug Connector
(Type 1)
-
Typically used with Level 1 and Level 2 charging
-
Many public charging stations have a J1772 plug
-
Usually Japanese and North American standard
-
Tesla also supports the J1772 standard with an adapter for J-plug
-
Supports up to 11 kW single phase
Mennekes connector
(Type 2)
-
Similar in characteristics to a Type 1
-
Usually by European manufacturers
-
Support up to 7 kW Single Phase and up to 43 kW 3-phase, 400 Volt
GB/T
(Level 2)
-
Chinese standard, not likely to be seen in the rest of the world
CHAdeMO - an abbreviation of "CHArge de MOve"
CHAdeMO 2.0
-
CCS Type 1 (CCS1) is similar to the J-plug with two additional contact points, supporting up to 375 kW
-
CCS Type 2 (CCS2) is similar to the Mennekes connector with two additional contact points and is a European standard, supporting up to 375 kW
-
Equivalent to "move using charge" or "move by charge" or "charge 'n' go", a reference to the fact that it is a fast charger, supporting up to 100 kW
-
Offering bi-directional power flow (i.e. V2X applications), expected to support over 375 kW
-
Chinese standard, not likely to be seen in the rest of the world
LEVEL 3
DC FAST CHARGING
Combined Charging System (CCS)
(also referred to as SAE Combo)
GB/T (Level 3)
Tesla SuperCharger
For Tesla vehicles only, supporting up to 150 kW
